ABOUT THE CRAFT

Wooden toys are a traditional craft form in India. There are number of art and craft regions in India where this craft is still practiced. Although, the number of artisans who are full time employed in this craft is continuously decreasing. Varanasi, which is also known as the oldest living city in the world is still known for lacquered toys and miniature utensils. Our partner master artisans from this old city have created these collectible figurines that represent the traditional lifestyle, folk tales, and beliefs of this city. These collectible toys & figurines are crafted from wood logs that are procured from nearby areas. Wood blocks are cut and chiseled to give shape to the design. The different parts of one piece are created separately and then assembled together. The hand carving is followed by slow heating of each piece to draw out moisture. This is followed by a hand coating/hand painting of white distemper, white paint and then a coat of lacquer. Each piece is then hand painted in natural non-toxic colors. The colors used are either derived from naturally available colors (tree barks, turmeric/tamarind etc. ) or acrylic poster colors.
